1.10 Downloading Programs to Safety Simplifier Systems

When a project is compiled, it can be downloaded to a Simplifier system. Programs in Simplifier Manager are called configurations. To download a configuration, click the Download button in the toolbar.

Note

Pressing the Download button when the project is not compiled will compile it automatically.

Before downloading a configuration to a network, the ID numbers of each Simplifier node must be specified in the dialog that is shown. The ID number of a Safety Simplifier is written on the label on the left side of the unit. The barcode on the label can be scanned to enter the ID number into Simplifier Manager using a barcode scanner.

Warning

Make sure that the node numbers and ID numbers of each node are correct before downloading a configuration to a network.

After entering ID numbers, the user can choose to download via USB, or via radio (using a Simplifier Monitor USB radio dongle).

Note

Radio is automatically selected if a Simplifier Monitor is connected to the PC via USB.

1.10.1 Downloading via radio

Before downloading via radio, the user may change some settings in the dialog shown.

  • New radio channel — this can be set to change the radio channel of a new or existing network.
  • Verify network after update — enable this to verify the health of the network after updating.

The first time a configuration is downloaded to a network, a free channel must be selected. This can be done with the Scan new channel button.

1.10.1.1 Scanning channels

Pressing the Scan new channel button brings up the channel scanner dialog. Here the user can select a free channel from the 16 available channels.

Pressing a channel number in the channel scanner selects that channel to be used for the network.

Pressing OK in the flash network dialog starts the downloading process. The textbox in the lower part of the dialog shows information about the update process. The status of each node can be seen in the upper part of the dialog.

To skip a node during update, click the corresponding Skip button in the rightmost column of the dialog. This can be useful, for example, if one node is not available when downloading.

1.10.2 Downloading via USB

Downloading via USB requires a USB cable (micro, or type C, depending on the Simplifier hardware version). Selecting USB shows a dialog like the dialog shown when downloading via radio. Here the status of each node can be seen.

To download via USB, each unit in the network must be connected via USB. When a unit is connected, press OK in the message box to start downloading the configuration to that unit.

Note

If updating via USB fails, it can be caused by the PC not providing enough power to the unit via USB. Try connecting the unit to a 24 V power source (via the IO terminals). Also try connecting the unit directly to a USB port on the PC (not via a USB hub). When using a laptop, connecting the laptop charger to the laptop can also help.

After downloading to a unit, the status is shown in the corresponding row.
